There are two old adages that I have heard most of my many years: “A camel is a horse designed by a committee,” and “To err is human; to really mess things up requires municipal government.”
The Lewiston City Council proves both of those beyond any doubt. Here, with winter on its way, it will not allow businesses to rent and use space within some existing buildings, thereby bringing tax revenue into the city coffers and lessening the amount that the city has to spend to heat the buildings so that no damage is caused by frozen pipes, etc.
The council has declared a moratorium on some types of usages for these buildings.
Basically, it appears members of the council would rather tax the amount of rain that runs off a roof than stick their necks out and allow people to bring in business that Lewiston very badly needs.
One more adage: “Stupid is as stupid does.”
Angelo Giberti, Lewiston
