WEST PARIS – Fundraising efforts to replace the burned wooden grandstand at the Harold C. Perham Athletic Complex on High Street are continuing with a public supper next month.

Nancy Henderson of the Grandstand Rebuilding Committee said the supper, silent auction and dance will be held Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Jackson-Silver American Legion Hall on Gore Road in Greenwood.

The grandstand, which was built in the mid-1940s, burned July 24. A teenage boy from West Paris was charged with arson in connection with the fire.

Since then, the charred shell of the 70- by 30-foot bleachers has been removed and the area graded at a cost of $5,225, which was paid by the town’s insurer, West Paris Athletic Association President Jeff Shock said Wednesday.

The town expects to receive about $54,000 to cover the loss of the grandstand and equipment stored underneath it, he said. The amount is about $40,000 more than initially stated, he added.

The new grandstand is estimated to cost between $45,000 and $50,000 and be similar to the old one but smaller, holding about 300 people, Shock said.

Because the building code requires that it be placed on a cement foundation, the town still has to raise an estimated $7,000 to $12,000 for that work, Shock said. So far, it has about $1,100 toward it, he said.

“We were very fortunate to get as much insurance money as we did, and from some donations, but we still need more,” Henderson said in a statement this week. “We still have a long way to go and a lot more fundraising to do to reach our goal,” she said.

The potluck supper will help. It will be served from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets for the silent auction will go on sale at 5 p.m. and drawings for items will begin at 7 p.m.

The BYOB dance will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight with music by the group Suspects. There will be a 50/50 raffle at the dance.

Tickets are $7 for the supper; $10 for the dance; $15 for both. Auction tickets are $2.50 for 10; $10 for 50.

The next committee meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Town Office. For more information call the town office at 674-2701.
