New Gloucester – A 1-year-old and his father were treated for smoke inhalation after a blanket caught fire in the room where the baby was napping Monday afternoon.

Fire Chief Gary Sacco said the family was “very lucky.”

He said the small fire caused little to no damage to the family’s Main Street home, which is owned by Rebecca Hill.

Crews were called to the home at 522 Main St. about 1:30 p.m. Sacco said smoke detectors wired throughout the home alerted the family to a fire, but it wasn’t until they opened the door to the baby’s room that they discovered it. A blanket that was being used as a curtain fell on top of a lamp and caught on fire, filling the room with smoke, he said.

The baby’s mother rushed the boy outside, while his father took out the burning blanket.

The boy and his father were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston and treated for smoke inhalation and released.

More than 15 firefighters from New Gloucester, Poland and Gray responded to the call.
