BANGOR (AP) – University of Maine System Chancellor Richard Pattenaude is ordering systemwide spending controls in response to declining enrollments and the effects of the global financial crisis.

Effective Monday, Pattenaude ordered measures to reduce operating costs at the University System’s centralized operations center and at the seven campuses. The measures include restrictions on hiring, delays in discretionary salary increases and efforts to minimize travel, purchases and employee overtime.

The chancellor’s cost-control orders come a few months after system trustees approved his plan to adopt $19 million in spending reductions for the current and future budget years.
