LEWISTON – Area veterans organizations and the public are invited to memorial services commemorating the 25th anniversary of the truck bombing of the U.S. Marine Barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. The service will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 25, rain or shine, at the Veterans Memorial Park.
On Oct. 23, 1983, 220 Marines, 18 Navy personnel and three Army soldiers were killed and 60 Americans were injured during the Lebanese civil war. The ceremony will also recall the Grenada Invasion on Oct. 25, 1983, and the terrorist bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, DDG 67 while it was harbored in Yemeni port of Aden on Oct. 12, 2000. Seventeen sailors were killed and 39 others were injured.
The program will open with singing of the National Anthem followed by an invocation, a a recollection of the events, followed by the laying of the Wreath of Enduring Memory.
