BRUNSWICK (AP) – The Navy is moving forward with a survey to make sure there are no radiological concerns when Brunswick Naval Air Station is turned over to local officials in 2011.

The Navy will launch a Historical Radiological Assessment next month in order to complete the two-year project before the base closes.

Capt. William Fitzgerald, the base commander, says the Navy wants to hear from anyone who may have handled radioactive material over the years.

Brunswick never served as a Strategic Air Command base, so nuclear bombs were never stored on the 3,200-acre property. But Fitzgerald says there was a lot of low-grade radioactive material in panels and dials 20 to 40 years ago.
