AUGUSTA – With one play and one pass, both Cony and Oxford Hills knew what kind of night it was going to be.
The Rams hit paydirt on a 57-yard pass on their first play from scrimmage Friday night. It was a hint of good things to come for Cony in a 41-6 victory over the Vikings.
“That got everything going,” quarterback Nick Lucas said. “That started everything off. It got our confidence up a lot.”
Both Cony and Oxford Hills entered the game winless, but the Rams finished the fall in style, scoring all 41 points in the first half.
“We know we’re a good team,” said Lucas. “We just missed opportunities through the season. We really could have been a 3-5 team. We could have made the playoffs. If we had played like that, we could have competed.”
Cony completed all 10 passes in the first half for 203 yards. Lucas threw four touchdown passes, while Luke Duncklee passed for one. Greg O’Neill added one touchdown on the ground as the Rams outgained the Vikings 265-79 in total yards in the first half.
“Cony didn’t do anything we didn’t expect,” said Oxford Hills coach Nate Danforth. “We knew they were going to come out and do everything they can and open the book on us.”
The Vikings’ cause wasn’t help by two interceptions and two fumbles.
Cony (1-7) scored on its first play from scrimmage when Lucas connected with Ray Cotnoir for 57 yards with 9:38 left in the quarter.
After Chris Robinson picked off a Viking pass, Cony turned that into a 14-0 lead. O’Neill rumbled in from the 4 with three minutes left.
Oxford Hills attempted to spark some momentum by going for it on fourth-and-one from their own 39. That rushed failed, and Cony took over with prime field position. Lucas hooked up with Cotnoir for 37 yards for a 21-0 lead with 10:58 left in the half.
“We couldn’t stop them,” said Danforth. “I was hoping to get some momentum and move the ball a little bit. We had some missed assignments by some kids who just started playing there this week.”
After an interception by Duncklee, the Rams used just three plays to turn that into a 27-0 lead with 9:52 left. Lucas hit O’Neill on an 11-yard play.
After an Oxford Hills fumble set Cony up at the 14, Duncklee made it 34-0 when he hit Brian Carville on a 14-yard pass play. The Rams added a 5-yard pass to Shane Hazzard from Lucas with 58 seconds left in the half.
The Vikings played a strong second half and bested Cony 9-2 in first downs.
Oxford Hills had a solid defensive stand and moved the ball on one drive that carried 69 yards. Nate Dubois scored on a 13-yard run with 4:05 left in the third. He led the Vikings with 70 yards on 11 carries. Jake Hall (47 yards on 10 carries) and Sean Merz (41 yards on 11 carries) contributed to the Vikings offense.
“After the half, we talked about winning the second half,” said Danforth. “We stepped up and played our defense. We drove the ball. It was huge for these kids and these seniors to have some success.”
