PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) – A suspicious white powder mailed to The Providence Journal and labeled “anthrax” was actually sugar.

The package was sent last week as part of what authorities believe was a national anthrax hoax targeting newspapers and other publications.

The Journal reported on its Web site Monday that preliminary test results of the powder indicate that it was sugar. The Newport Daily News received a similar package last week, and initial tests also indicated that it was not anthrax.

A California man, Marc M. Keyser, was arrested in Sacramento last week on charges of sending hoax anthrax threats by mail. A federal judge has set bond at $25,000.
