FARMINGTON – Incumbent state Sen. Walter Gooley, R-Farmington, carried his hometown of Farmington with 2,202 votes over the challenger for his District 18 seat, Belgrade Democrat Ann Woloson, with 1,986 votes.
In Eustis, results showed Gooley leading Woloson 203-158, and Wilton gave Gooley 1,391 votes to Woloson’s 900.
Gooley also led over Woloson in Coplin Plantation 45-40 and in Rangeley Plantation, 83-49. In Wayne, Woloson led 428 to Gooley’s 295 votes. In Weld, voters favored Gooley 155-125.
Gooley said he wanted to continue in the Senate to help improve the quality of life for Maine citizens and find ways to control the size of government.
His main goal will be to reduce the level of taxation through a reduction in personal income taxes.
Woloson, 46, wanted to work on issues such as schools, health care, the environment and taxes. She wanted to listen to people in the district and bring new ideas to Augusta to address those issues.
She hopes to improve Maine’s economy by increasing access to educational opportunities in alternative energy and health care fields in order to create jobs and support small businesses. She also wants to work to reduce taxes for people living on fixed incomes.
While Gooley feels the DirigoHealth program is not meeting its goals and needs revamping, Woloson believes Dirigo provides competition in Maine’s private health insurance market. She also believes health care costs need to be controlled and the savings redirected to pay for Dirigo and those who can’t afford care.
Woloson is the executive director of a nonprofit agency, Prescription Policy Choices, created to reduce prescription drug prices in Maine and the United States.
