FARMINGTON – State Rep. Janet Mills, D-Farmington, led her hometown of Farmington in the race to re-claim her House District 89 seat.

Voters in Farmington chose Mills with 2,807 votes over her challenger, Republican Keith Mahoney, a student at the University of Maine at Farmington, with 1,434 votes.

Results from other towns were not available by late Tuesday night.

Mills, 60, of Farmington, has said that balancing the budget while providing better funding for education would be her main goal if re-elected to the Legislature. She also hoped to correct the penalties and other problems within the school consolidation plan.

Mahoney, 21, chose to run for the office after hearing people call for change. He believed the state should help citizens by creating more jobs and providing tax relief.

For Mahoney, taxes were the major issue to be addressed and he felt reform should begin with fiscal responsibility. He would like to see the state create a business-friendly environment to attract new businesses to help stimulate the economy with jobs and tax revenue.
