AUBURN – The Auburn-Lewiston Art and Literature Club will feature a presentation about industrial child labor by Annette Vance Dorey, museum educator at Museum L-A, at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at the Woman’s Literary Union, Elm Street.
Since joining the staff at Museum L-A in summer 2007, Dorey has presented numerous programs, particularly for area youth, about child labor and the area’s industrial history. “Everyone seems to be interested in the dreadful conditions surrounding child labor, which was a vital part of New England’s industrial life a century ago,” said Dorey.
The program will include some of the children’s own words about the working conditions and images of children working in the textile mills. It also will highlight the changes in child labor laws.
In addition to conducting educational programs about immigration, child labor and the economic side of mill workers’ lives, Dorey works with student interns and service learning partnerships from the colleges.
She is also preparing Museum L-A’s first traveling trunk with educational activities to loan to classrooms. “The traveling trunk,” Dorey said, “will bring hands-on history experiences to students studying their community, industry in Maine, U.S. history and art.”
Museum L-A is located at 35 Canal St. and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, contact Museum L-A at 333-3881 or www.museumla.org. For more information on the Art and Literature Club, contact Sheila Laurendeau at 782-3467.
