FARMINGTON – Most Franklin County towns in Senate District 18 chose to send Sen. Walter Gooley, R-Farmington, back for another term.
Gooley’s opponent, Ann Woloson, a Democrat, claimed other towns, including her hometown of Belgrade.
Late Wednesday afternoon, Gooley was still checking on results and had not heard from his opponent. He didn’t have returns from each town and was hesitant to claim victory, although he said he heard he had won 52-48 percent.
Votes within the 28 District 17 towns tallied 9,245 for Gooley and 8,203 for Woloson.
Staff in Augusta had told him that some towns where votes were close, like his, were being checked but that didn’t necessarily mean a recount, he said.
Gooley, who has eight years in the House and two in the Senate, feels the times are ripe for a “perfect storm” of issues including a very large budget deficit for the rest of the fiscal year.
“It was an interesting campaign and she is an interesting person who is probably not done with politics,” he said.
