NEW PORTLAND – President-elect Barack Obama carried this town with 236 votes to 213 cast for Sen. John McCain. Independent candidate Ralph Nader had four votes and Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney received two.
For U.S. Senate, Sen. Susan Collins drew more than double the votes cast for Rep. Tom Allen, 303 to 142. And, for the U.S. House of Representatives, Rep. Michael Michaud had 236 votes to 201 cast for Republican John Frary.
On the referendum questions, Question 1 repealing the beverage tax passed 205-107; Question 2 on the Oxford County casino proposal failed 137-128; and Question 3 on the projects bonds failed 153-96.
For Senate District 26, Republican Peter Mills was re-elected, 328-104, over Democrat challenger Robert Sezak.
In House District 88, Republican candidate Wright Pinkham was re-elected, 259-183, over Democrat challenger Garrison Cupples.
For Somerset County Commission, incumbent Paul Hatch drew 344 votes to Robert Dunphy’s 286 and Jason Frantz’ 141 votes.
Democrat John Alsop had 347 votes for judge of probate. Democrat Victoria Hatch was re-elected with 344 votes for register of probate.
Voting results from New Portland were inadvertently omitted from the Sun Journal’s reporting earlier in the week.
