ORLANDO, Fla. – Scott Verplank shot his second straight 8-under 64 on Friday to take a three-stroke lead in the Children’s Miracle Network Classic at Disney, the final official PGA Tour event of the season.

Steve Marino (66) and Troy Matteson (68) were tied for second, but the real drama was at the bottom of the standings.

Friday was cut day in the event that ends the race for spots in the top 125 on the final money list, the cutoff for full 2009 PGA Tour.

Bob Tway, who played with Verplank and shot a 62 after a first-round 73, made the cut and needs to finish in the top 12 to make the top 125.

Mizuno Classic

SHIMA, Japan – Japan’s Mayu Hattori and Miki Saiki shot 5-under 67s to share the Mizuno Classic lead, leaving Women’s British Open champion Shin Ji-yai a stroke back in the event sanctioned by the LPGA Tour and Japan LPGA.

Hattori, the IDC Otsuka Ladies winner last week on the JLPGA, birdied all four par 5s in her bogey-free round at Kinetsu Kashikojima.

HSBC Champions

SHANGHAI, China – Heavy rain wiped out play in the HSBC Champions, forcing organizers to find a way to squeeze in 54 holes over Saturday and Sunday.

Sweden’s Henrik Stenson shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Phil Mickelson, Sergio Garcia, Anthony Kim and Adam Scott.

Nationwide Tour

MCKINNEY, Texas – Darron Stiles made a tap-in eagle on the final hole for a 4-under 67 and a share of the second-round lead with Garrett Osborn in the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship.

In sunny, calm conditions at TPC Craig Ranch, Stiles’ 5-wood shot from 242 yards hit the pin on the par-5 18th to set up the short eagle try. Seventh on the money list with $303,427, he’s already guaranteed a PGA Tour spot next year.

Osborn, 40th on the money list with only the final top 25 earning 2009 PGA Tour cards, had a 65 to match Stiles at 11-under 141.

Colt Knost, the 2007 U.S. Amateur champion from SMU, was 9 under after a 66.
