LEWISTON – A woman escaped unscathed Friday night after her SUV clipped a mailbox on Randall Road, went airborne and rolled into a utility pole, snapping it at the base.

Several homes in the area of Randall Road and Sabattus Street went dark after 6:30 p.m. as power lines came down and a transformer exploded.

The Jeep ended up on its side with a metal guy wire wrapped around it. Wires fell across the street, sparks flew and the lights went out, but the driver walked away.

The driver was later identified as Lyndsey Davis, 21, of 1377 Sabattus St. What caused the wreck remained unknown. Davis told police the only thing she remembered was looking up and seeing a pole in front of her.

Davis was headed outbound on Randall Road when she rounded a slight curve, drove off the road and struck a mailbox. The mailbox shattered and pieces of it flew into a car parked in a clearing next to the road.

The car then flipped and sailed into the pole, snapping it in half near the ground and sending a transformer tumbling.

Police blocked off a section of Randall Road as fire and power crews responded to assess the damage and make sure no one came in contact with live wires.

Davis’ Jeep was demolished.

After speaking with witnesses and examining the crash site, police said it appears speed was a factor. The crash remained under investigation.
