On Monday, October 27, a spirited group of Saint Dom’s students gathered a trunk load of pumpkins, a box of markers, and a stack of coloring paper and headed off to the Jubilee Center in downtown Lewiston.
When we arrived at the Center, after setting up the table with the huge orange pumpkins and all the carving utensils, we were greeted by a group of energetic kids who jumped off the bus ready to go. They were so excited and some had never really had the chance to carve pumpkins before.
It was a blast! All the children were really grossed out when they had to pull the slime and seeds out of the middle of the pumpkin, but they said that it was all worth it when they got to start making the face and finishing up by placing a candle inside the jack-o-lantern.
After two hours, it was time to say our good-byes. We finished off the day with taking at least a 100 pictures, and many, many hugs. The kids didn’t want us to leave, almost as much as we didn’t want to go.
It was such a great experience to spend the afternoon with the children at the Jubilee Center. It was amazing to see their excitement over an activity that many of us take for granted. We have plans to go back again for another visit in the near future.
