AVON – A dune buggy and a four-wheeler, left in what the owners thought was a secure place, were smashed with a sledge hammer-type object between Sunday night and Tuesday.

The off-road vehicles sustained heavy damage, Franklin County Sheriff’s Deputy Heidi Gould said. They had been left in a covered area near the Day Mountain Road near the Temple line. The owners, who are from Strong, used the vehicles to gain access to other property on Day Mountain, she said.

There is a network of trails that are heavily used by ATVers and hunters and the owners are hoping someone may have seen something and report it to the Sheriff’s Department at 778-2680, Gould said.

The deputy is also investigating theft of about a half-cord of firewood reported stolen Thursday from a camp on Route 142 in Freeman Township, she said.

The wood was taken within the last two weeks.
