GORHAM – Sophomore guard Kaylie DeMillo scored a career-high 25 points on the strength of seven 3-pointers to lead the University of Southern Maine in a convincing 76-57 win over the University of Maine at Farmington in the USM Tipoff Tournament on Friday.

DeMillo registered 17 points in the first half as the Huskies built a 44-26 advantage at the break. Stacey Kent added 13 points and a game-high seven assists.

Haley Johnson and Nicole Paradis combined for 15 points in the win.

Erin Porter paced the Beavers with 17 points while Ashley Busque and Caitlyn Lafin added 10 apiece.

DeMillo’s seven three-point field goals is second all-time in single game history at USM. Kent holds the single-game record with eight 3-pointers scored in February 2007.

The Huskies (2-0) will face Norwich University in the championship game Saturday at 3 p.m.

Bates 58, RIC 39

SALEM, Mass. – Senior co-captain Val Beckwith scored a game-high 16 points and led the way with a career-high 14 rebounds to lead Bates College over Rhode Island College 58-39 in the first round of the Salem State College Tipoff Classic on Friday.

Lauren Yanofsky and Kellie Goodridge added 9 and 8 points, respectively in the win.

The Bobcats (1-0) held the Anchorwomen to 25 percent shooting for the game.

Ashley Abrahamson and Stephanie Coro led the Anchorwomen (1-2) with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

The Bobcats take on the Lady Vikings of Salem State in the tourney championship game Saturday at 5 p.m.

Men’s basketball

Bates 80, Wells 63

CLINTON, N.Y. – Jon Furbush won his coaching debut, Alex Gallant tallied career-highs of 16 points and nine rebounds and Nick Schmiemann came off the bench for a career-high 14 points as Bates College opened their season with an 80-63 victory over Wells College in the Hamilton Tipoff Tournament on Friday.

Scott Place and Marshall Hatch also hit double figures for the Bobcats (1-0) with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Darrell Bullock led Wells with 28 points.

The Bobcats never trailed in the game, held a 44-29 rebounding advantage and received 36 points from their bench. The win places them in the title game with the winner of the Hamilton-Mount St. Vincent game Saturday at 4 p.m.
