SALEM, Mass. – Val Beckwith drained 23 points to lead Bates College to a 65-60 triumph over Salem State College in the championship game of the Salem State Tipoff Classic Saturday afternoon.
Beckwith hit a layup with 4:22 remaining in the game to give the Bobcats (2-0) the lead back at 54-53, and scored six more down the stretch to help secure the win over the Vikings (1-2). Beckwith netted 16 of her points in the second half.
Sophomore guard Maggie DePoy scored a career-high 13 points, including 11 in the first half, hitting 3 of 5 shots from 3-point range. Junior guard Kellie Goodridge added six points and a team-high nine rebounds, while sophomore Christine McCall grabbed six rebounds.
USM 64, Norwich 61
GORHAM – Stacey Kent scored a game-high 18 points to lead the University of Southern Maine to a 64-61 victory over the Norwich University in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Kristi Violette notched a double-double with 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Huskies (3-0), while Kaylie DeMillo contributed 15 points on three 3-pointers and six from the line.
Erica Rate went 4-for-7 from three-point range to lead the Cadets (2-1) with 12 points in the losing effort.
UMF 79, Husson 76
GORHAM – Four different players scored in double figures and Erin Porter led with 17 points as the University of Maine at Farmington edged Husson 79-76 in women’s basketball action Saturday.
Cailtyn Laflin provided seven field goals and a free throw for 16 points for the Beavers (2-1). Farmington led 38-37 at the half.
Shelby Bradford recorded a double-double with a game-high 18 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the Eagles (1-2) in the loss.
Men’s basketball
Elms 81, UMF 67
FARMINGTON – Tournament MVP Javon Mathis tallied 16 points as 25th-ranked Elms College defeated the University of Maine at Farmington 81-67 to claim the Hight Chevrolet men’s basketball tournament championship Saturday afternoon.
The Blazers (4-0) used a first-half run to build a double-digit lead and were strong on defense, posting 24 steals. The Elms’ lead ballooned to 21 points in the opening seconds of the second half with a Juan Alverio 3-pointer to take a 56-35 command.
Eric Lelansky led the Beavers with 17 points, including three 3-pointers, while Eric Taylor supplied 14 points off the bench. Josh Tanguay pitched in with nine points and seven rebounds.
Hamilton 85, Bates 66
CLINTON, N.Y. – Harlee Wood scored a game-high 23 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead Hamilton College to an 85-66 triumph over Bates College in the championship game of the Hamilton Tipoff Tournament Saturday afternoon.
The Continentals (2-0) led by just two points with 5:29 left in the first half, but took a 44-31 advantage into the break on a 14-3 run.
Junior guard Marshall Hatch and sophomore forward Alex Gallant paced the Bobctas (1-1) with 14 points apiece, each scoring in double figures. Junior guard Chris Wilson earned a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while adding six assists.
Providence 83, Maine 62
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jeff Xavier scored 23 points and Geoff McDermott added 14 rebounds as the Friars rolled over Maine 83-62 on Saturday.
Xavier came off the bench to sink five of his 10 three-point attempts for Providence, which shot 50.8 percent from the field. Bench players combined for more than half of the Friars’ points.
Sharaud Curry had seven assists in co-ordinating the Providence offense, and Jonathan Kale added 13 points.
The Friars (3-1) never trailed in the game, and successfully kept the Black Bears from building any kind of momentum. .
Mark Socoby and Kaimondre Owes each had 13 points to lead Maine (3-1), which fell despite shooting a solid 23-for-53 for the game.
Men’s hockey
USM 6, St. Michael’s 2
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Jon Rutt set up three goals as the University of Southern Maine defeated St. Michael’s College, 6-2, in an ECAC men’s hockey matchup Saturday afternoon.
The Huskies (1-1) built a 3-0 lead in the opening period on goals by senior Dan Gordon, freshman Dan Rautenberg and senior Eric Morgani.
Each team lit the lamp once in the middle period. Junior David Vorozilchak scored a power-play goal at 16:23 to put the Purple Knights (0-2) on the board. Just 25 seconds later, junior Chris Travis restored the Huskies three-goal advantage.
Southern Maine pushed the lead to 5-1 only 24 seconds into the third period on a power-play goal from junior Brett Kapteina, and following a power-play marker by Saint Michael’s, sophomore Zach Joy closed the scoring at 17:39.
Cross country
Jasud, Gomes race well
HANOVER, Ind. – Junior Tyler Jasud of Rumford and freshman Alex Gomes of the Univeristy of Southern Maine men’s cross country team each finished in the top 100 at the NCAA Division III National Championship Saturday afternoon. Jasud finished 43rd among the 278 finishers, while Gomes came home in the 97th place overall. Jasud covered the eight-kilometer course in 25 minutes and 5.35 seconds.
His time was less than six seconds behind the final All-American spot (35th). Gomes posted a time of 25:36.90 and was the seventh finisher among the first-year runners competing.
Junior Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College was the individual winner with a time of 24:22.03.
