PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Jeff Xavier scored 23 points and Geoff McDermott added 14 rebounds as the Friars rolled over Maine 83-62 on Saturday.

Xavier came off the bench to sink five of his 10 three-point attempts for Providence, which shot 50.8 percent from the field. Bench players combined for more than half of the Friars’ points.

Sharaud Curry had seven assists in co-ordinating the Providence offense, and Jonathan Kale added 13 points.

The Friars (3-1) never trailed in the game, and successfully kept the Black Bears from building any kind of momentum. They overwhelmed Maine’s defense early, opening up a 30-9 lead in the first 8:57.

Mark Socoby and Kaimondre Owes each had 13 points to lead Maine (3-1), which fell despite shooting a solid 23-for-53 for the game.
