PORTLAND – Team of the Decade in Class A football is no longer up for debate.

Bonny Eagle High School captured its fourth state championship in five years Saturday night, outlasting Skowhegan, 26-6, at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Quarterback Nate Doehler connected with Ryan Nason for a 19-yard touchdown and rushed for his own 10-yard score in the fourth quarter for the Scots (10-2), who added this year’s Gold Ball to their previous titles in 2004, 2005 and 2007.

Biddeford was the last school to claim four out of five, accomplishing that feat from 1990 to 1994. Bonny Eagle’s program was in its infancy at the end of the Tigers’ historic run. The Scots played a Class B schedule in those years.

Doehler carried 15 times for 125 yards and struck for another 111 yards through the air.

The Scots (10-2) avenged their only on-field loss by knocking off Deering in the regional semifinals. Bonny Eagle also forfeited a one-sided win over Westbrook because it used an ineligible player in the fourth quarter.

Skowhegan (10-2) upset the top two seeds in Eastern Class A, Lawrence and Edward Little, and acquitted itself fabulously for three quarters of the final.

Cody Vigue put the Indians in front with a 2-yard run, capping a 10-play, 68-yard drive.

Bonny Eagle answered prior to the half when Josh Ruby scored the first of his two touchdowns from nine yards out.

Both teams missed their conversion attempts, leaving the game tied 6-6 at halftime.

Ruby’s 2-yard plunge and Doehler’s extra point put the Scots in front to stay.

Skowhegan halfback Billy Clark, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards this season, was contained to 54 on 24 carries.

Bonny Eagle held the Indians to 155 total yards and forced three turnovers. One of those was an interception by Doehler. The two-way star ran back another pick for an apparent touchdown, but it was wiped out by a defensive holding penalty.

Ruby logged 10 carries for 49 yards for Bonny Eagle. Nason notched 63 yards through the air.

Skowhegan was appearing in its first state final since 1989. Bonny Eagle has beaten four different Eastern teams in its reign. Bangor, Mt. Blue and Lawrence previously stood in the Scots’ way.
