DIXFIELD – The Lisbon and Dirigo wrestling teams took it to the mat in a season-opening double-dual meet Friday.

A flow of pins got Lisbon going and it didn’t let up in 54-18 win against the Cougars.

The Greyhounds beat Foxcroft 72-12 and Dexter 57-24. These four teams have combined to win every Class C state championship since 1996.

“We didn’t simply roll over against them,” Dirigo coach Doug Gilbert said. “Granted the final score was lopsided, but we wrestled some close matches to the end. Its encouraging because with the hype Lisbon has received, rightfully so, we could have folded up.”

Lisbon, the defending Class C state champions, return 12 wrestlers, including Forrest Cornell and Marcus Bubar each state champions.

Cornell stuck Dylan Castonguay at 112, while Bubar executed a reversal in the third period for a 5-3 decision over Tom Hines.

The Greyhounds had jumped out to a lead behind pins by newcomer Dan Skofield (285) on big Ben Dolloff. Josh Pomerleau (119) sunk in a reverse-half nelson on Ryan Lemay, and Mike McNamara (125) broke away from Josh Hines, and Matt Nicholson caught Bryan Blackman at 130.

Dirigo (2-1) stopped the bleeding by winning two matches. Brandon Jonaitis came from behind for an 11-5 decision against Mike McManus (135). Chad Oakes (140) executed a sit-out to break a tie in an 11-5 decision over Lance Tompson.

“We appreciated the opportunity to see other Class C teams,” Lisbon coach Mark Stevens said. “You really have to credit Dirigo because despite the score, they made us work. Its early and what you see from teams now is not what you’ll see in February. It’s a long season.”

Against Dexter, the score was tied or changes sides eight times before the Cougars pulled away for a 47-36 win. Dexter led 12-0 before Cougar freshman Caleb hall pinned Riley Brooks with a deep reverse at 103. Tom Hines escaped with 41 seconds left for a decision to put Dirigo ahead for good. Alex Meile clinched the meet with a unorthodox pin at 152.

“I made it up after starting with a cross-body ride,” Miele. “In practice the team works hard and drill the moves. Tonight, the team might have been a little nervous, but we need to get over it.”

Dirigo clawed Foxcroft 84-3 behind 11 pins including Josh Palmer 160, first-year senior Josh Henderson 171 and James Olsen at 189.

Lisbon received a strong finishing kick from Cam Bubar (171), Art Stambach (189) Joe Doughty (215) and Skofield in 10 pins against Foxcroft.

“We had some strong performances,” Stevens said. “We’ve had Dan Skofield for two weeks; he transferred in from Michigan. He is working hard and learning the ropes. A pleasurable kid to be around.”

Foxcroft is coached by Jayson Allain, a 1977 state champion at Sanford, who went on to compete nationally and internationally during the late 1970s and 1980s, and is a member of the Maine Wrestling Hall of Fame.
