LISBON FALLS – One was enough.

After missing its first 14 shots from the floor in the fourth quarter Friday night, the Lisbon girls’ basketball team only needed one field goal in the final eight minutes.

That basket, a three-point play by Renee Moore, put the Greyhounds in the lead for good with 42 seconds left, and Lisbon escaped with a 38-34 win over Jay.

“We only needed one, but I wasn’t thinking it was going to happen,” said Lisbon coach Jake Gentle. “I was getting all stressed out a little bit.”

Lisbon had watched Jay erase a 10-point deficit in the second half. The Tigers took the lead with three minutes left but couldn’t seal the win. Missed free throws and turnovers gave Lisbon new life.

“We were down 10 and being able to comeback and take the lead on the road against a good team is the positive we’ll take out of it,” said Jay coach Chris Bessey. “We didn’t give up. We just made some mistakes in the last two minutes that you can’t make if you want to win ballgames at the high school level.”

Moore finished with 17 points for Lisbon while Sam Purcell had eight. Jay got 11 from Liz LeBlanc.

After getting a free throw from Hillary Deane and a three-pointer from LeBlanc to end the third down 32-25, the Tigers scored nine straight to start the fourth. Mallory Bonnevie led off the run with a jumper. After a Betsy Gemelli free throw, she scored on a rebound and set up Dean for the tying basket with 4:44 left. Beth Moore put the Tigers ahead with 3 minutes left, hitting a jumper off a Bonnevie inbounds pass.

Lisbon struggled to squelch that run or answer it. The Greyhounds missed its first 14 shots and had five turnovers in the quarter.

“It was stressful that we weren’t getting any shots,” said Moore. “We weren’t going to make shots if we don’t shoot. So we just had to keep shooting. We hit them when we needed them the most.”

Lisbon’s scrappy defense kept the Greyhounds close. Jay had nine turnovers in the fourth quarter, including five in the last two minutes. The Tigers also missed the front end of a one-and-one twice, allowing Lisbon to stay within two points.

“The senior leadership and the juniors we have on this team, they’ve been playing for two or three years on varsity,” said Gentle. “They’re mentally tough. They know they can be in any game.”

After a Stephanie Smith steal, Lisbon got the winning basket with 42 seconds left. Moore got the ball in the paint. She turned and took it toward the basket with three Jay defenders closing in. She scored and drew the foul for a three-point play that made it 35-34.

“I just knew I had to make a strong move to the basket,” said Moore. “I had to be there for my team. I was just looking for the basket.”

The Tigers still had a chance, but a Moore steal and an alert timeout by Kelly Bourgoin gave Lisbon the ball. After a missed free throw, Purcell got the rebound and was fouled. She hit both free throws to pad the lead. Moore added another with 10 seconds left, following another steal.

“Renee made a great up-and-under move at the end and got the foul,” said Gentle. “That changed the end of the game for us. Then we had a couple of steals, and we were able to knock some free throws down.”
