LEOMINSTER, Mass. (AP) – The New Hampshire man whose 3-year-old boy who suffered second- and third-degree burns during an illegal fireworks display on July 4 has been placed on probation.

The Worcester Telegram & Gazette reports that criminal charges against 38-year-old Sean Maloney of Merrimack, N.H., were continued for one year.

Maloney was ordered to make a $100 contribution to a burns hospital and perform community service to warn others about the dangers of fireworks.

Maloney’s family was at a gathering in Leominster, Mass., on the holiday when police say he shot fireworks from a bucket. The bucket tipped, and the Roman candles struck the boy about 20 feet away.

He suffered burns to his thighs, wrist and face and spent a week in the hospital.
