LEWISTON – Irene Duplissis and daughter, Cheryl Webber, are December artists in Central Maine Medical Center Rotating Art Gallery, located in lobby of Central Maine Heart and Vascular Institute at 60 Main St.
Webber, of Mechanic Falls, was born and raised in a home where expressing herself through art was encouraged. Her mother and first teacher, Irene Duplissis, taught her many forms and mediums, including oil, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor and clay.
Her work is realistic with special attention to detail and is displayed in collections worldwide. The past four years have been devoted to sculpting clay into realistic babies from miniatures to lifelike. The CMMC show will feature a large collection of her watercolor paintings. She can be reached at 346-6015.
Duplissis has been painting professionally for many years. Born in Washington, D.C., she came to the Lewiston-Auburn area at the age of 9 and began her art studies in a private elementary school.
The setting provided her with a classic introduction of the arts under the tutelage of French nuns. For several years, Duplissis devoted much of her time teaching art and doing workshops. Today her work can be found in various galleries and private collections.
She particularly enjoys doing outdoor art shows where she gets to meet the people. “Rustic realism” would probably best describe her style of transparent watercolor. She said she enjoys mostly the subjects that depict the beautiful character of the New England states.
The gallery is sponsored by the Woman’s Hospital Association. For more information about the association, call the hospital gift shop at 795-2295. To learn more about the art exhibits, call Kathleen Cormier at 346-3462.
