LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors voted 8-1 Monday to put a plan to consolidate the district and Jay school system before voters in Livermore and Livermore Falls.
Opposing the vote was Rod Newman of Livermore.
The referendum will be held Tuesday, Jan. 27, at polling stations in each town. If approved by voters, the consolidation would go into effect on July 1, 2009.
School directors also voted to make no recommendation on the vote.
Superintendent Terry Despres said that by not making a recommendation, “it does not put you in a political stance.” Voters will decide on the facts, he said.
The board set a public hearing on the proposal for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at the Livermore Falls High School.
Jay is holding a public hearing on the plan at 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, in the Jay High School cafeteria. An earlier hearing was postponed due to last Thursday’s snowstorm.
