LIVERMORE FALLS – It may be the grooved-brick siding on the municipal building that is allowing water to leak inside the Town Office, interim Town Manager Kristal Flagg told selectmen Monday.
Initially, it was thought to be the roof installed in 2006, but a roofing contractor and a mason reviewed the areas where there are leaks and believe the water may be collecting and running in along the grooves, she said.
Each brick has a groove in it and the bricks run up past the roof, Flagg said.
Dave St. Hilaire, whose Auburn company installed the roof, said he believes it is the bricks, which were not designed for buildings in Maine but for Arizona, that are the cause, Flagg said.
Mason Andy Pratt plans to come back during a warmer day this winter with St. Hilaire to see what can be done, Flagg said.
In another matter, board Chairwoman Louise Chabot reminded selectmen of the public hearing at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17, at the town office to determine if a burned-out apartment building at 90 Main St. is dangerous or a public nuisance under state law.
It burned in March and is owned by Thomas Harville of Skowhegan. He had no insurance on the vacant structure. Two local teenagers were charged with arson in connection with the fire.
Selectmen also agreed Monday to close the town office at noon Wednesday, Dec. 24, and to reopen it at the regular time Monday, Dec. 29. Town office employees will use a vacation or personal day so they can be off Friday, Dec. 26.
The town’s transfer station will also close at noon Wednesday, Dec. 24, but reopen at 8 a.m. Friday, Dec. 26.
The town office and the transfer station will be closed Thursday, Jan. 1.
Sewer Department Supervisor Kent Mitchell told selectmen that a sewer pipe that had to go under the railroad tracks behind Franklin Avenue has been replaced. Though the total bill is not in, Mitchell estimated that the cost would be about $18,000. It was initially estimated to cost $43,000 to replace the broken line.
