BOSTON (AP) – If Boston College coach Al Skinner needs an example of how hustle leads to easy baskets, he can show the film of Corey Raji’s game against Maine.
Raji went 12-for-12 from the floor and scored a career-high 26 points to lead BC to its seventh straight win, 99-61 over the Black Bears on Tuesday afternoon.
“Most guys are not necessarily willing to work as hard as he is. He’s constantly chasing the ball,” Skinner said. “He’s certainly one of the guys that would benefit from running the floor. Some nights you get the ball and some nights you don’t. He benefited (today). Other nights other guys will.”
Raji, a smallish forward for collegiate standards at 6-6, made the most of fastbreak baskets and rebounds off misses.
“He a tremendous undersized 4-man, highly effective,” Maine coach Ted Woodward said. “We knew it was going to be a challenge coming in here.”
Tyrese Rice added 21 points in limited playing time for the Eagles (10-2). Joe Trapani scored 15 points and Rakim Sanders had 12 points and seven assists.
Gerald McLemore led the Black Bears (5-7) with 18 points.
It was Raji’s career-day that helped make it an easy afternoon for the Eagles. He added a career-high 13 rebounds and four assists. He did have two misses from the foul line, going 2-for-4.
“For our team to be successful you’ve got to have players like Corey on the team,” said Rice, the team’s leading scorer. “He doesn’t complain for the ball. He makes the most of his hustle plays and hustle rebounds.”
Rice, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in minutes played last season at 39 per game, saw just 24 minutes of action. He was 8-for-13 from the field with nine assists.
In an atmosphere that resembled a preseason scrimmage more than a regular season game – with only about a thousand fans in attendance due to a rare early afternoon starting time – the Eagles used first-half runs of 11-0 and 12-0 to pull to their 24-point halftime edge.
The lead increased to 73-39 on Raji’s put-back with 13:21 to play. The Eagles pushed their advantage to 40 points, 94-54, on Reggie Jackson’s basket with 4:14 left.
