AUGUSTA – Twelve students recently completed Maine’s first Expanded Function Dental Assistant certificate program.

The students, working under the direct supervision of a dentist, can place sealants, apply fluoride treatments, place filling materials in teeth and perform other expanded routine functions.

“By adding the EFDAs to a dental practice, dentists can increase the number of patients they treat,” said Maine Dental Association Executive Director Frances Miliano. “The goal is to expand access to dental care by increasing the skills of the assistants.”

The students must be either certified dental assistants or dental hygienists sponsored by a dentist who provides on-the-job training that complements the classroom and lab work and then is responsible for the direct supervision.

The graduating class included Jenny Hall, Albion; Jenny Brown Lowe, Lewiston; Stephanie Martin, Auburn; Ann Rand, Minot; Diana Olsen, Otisfield; Keri Ponte, Exeter; Garret Richardson, Buxton; Melissa Stewart, Dresden; Jessica Taylor, Livermore; Rachel Trusselle, York; and Catherine Willey, Windham.
