JOLIET, Ill. (AP) – A small plane crash that killed a Wisconsin couple appears to have occurred after the aircraft “took a hard left” and flipped over while taking off from the Joliet Regional Airport, the National Transportation Safety Board said Friday.
The cause of Thursday night’s crash was still unclear, but it appears the couple had stopped to refuel, NTSB officials said.
The Will County coroner’s office tentatively identified the victims as 52-year-old Deborah Loiselle and 50-year-old Stuart Seffern of Madison. The coroner’s office says autopsies are planned for Saturday.
NTSB officials say the plane appeared to be flying from Orlando, Fla.
A Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman says the plane was a Lancair.
Such planes are typically purchased as kits and home-built.
Joliet Park District executive director Dominic Egizio says the fiery crash occurred at about 9 p.m. under clear skies. The district operates the airport.
