Students had a day off Wednesday when snow, sleet and rain canceled classes and after school activities in Rumford, Dixfield, Bethel, Buckfield and Oxford school districts.

SAD 44 Superintendent David Murphy said this was the fourth snow day of the school year for his district. The district built five snow days into its calendar.

“It’s unusual to have snow days before Christmas,” he Murphy. “It’s been an interesting winter.”

Three of the four days were before Christmas vacation, he said.

In Dixfield and Rumford school districts, and the Region 9 School of Applied Technology in Mexico, Wednesday was the third snow day of the winter.

Those districts do not build snow days into their schedules, but instead add extra class days at the end of the school year, said SAD 21 Superintendent Tom Ward in Dixfield and SAD 43 Superintendent Jim Hodgkin in Rumford.

In SAD 39 in Buckfield, Superintendent Rick Colpitts said Wednesday was the third snow day. Schools have also experienced two late starts so far this school year.

SAD 39 builds five snow days into its schedule.

“We traditionally use five snow days and a day or two more,” he said Wednesday afternoon.

Although after-school activities were canceled, the regular monthly meeting of the school board will be held Wednesday night.
