AUGUSTA (AP) – Gov. John Baldacci and his Cabinet will all be on hand when the governor unveils a two-year state budget for Maine that’s expected to call for deep cuts to state programs and services.
An aide to Baldacci says the budget for the two years starting July 1 will total $6.1 billion. The figure, smaller than the current biennial budget of $6.3 billion, reflects the depth of proposed reductions. The details are to be presented Friday afternoon.
Baldacci spokesman David Farmer declined to identify any specific cuts that will be proposed in the new package, but said reductions included in the current budget revision package now under committee review shows the direction the administration’s going.
Education, human services and corrections are among the hardest-hit services in the revised budget for the present year.
More than 90 state jobs would also be eliminated.
