RUMFORD – An evening of humor is scheduled for 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Mountain Valley High School auditorium when the Rumford Professional Firefighters Local 1601 will present three stand-up comics from Boston.
The fundraiser is their first in several years, and the first to bring in comedians from outside Maine.
The show is recommended for adults and children older than 13, firefighter Ed Carey said.
Called “A Night of Laughs,” it’s rated PG-13, he said.
A $10 donation is requested.
“The union used to be very active in sponsoring various events,” Carey said.
The money raised helps fund scholarships for Mountain Valley High School students, the Burn Foundation, and firefighters who may have long-term, serious illnesses or injuries.
“Funds need to be raised because union dues just don’t cover everything,” deputy Chief Ben Byam said. “Dues have declined as the number of firefighters has declined.”
Local 1601 represents 11 firefighters in the Rumford department.
A booklet featuring the comedians will be distributed during the show. It includes advertisements from businesses and individuals. The booklet, along with the show, is organized by East Coast Marketing, a professional organization that raises funds for local organizations.
Carey said the Auburn Fire Department and others have used the organization to help them raise money.
Although he could not provide the amount of money raised so far through the organization, Carey said the community has given solid support.
“This is one of the best things in years for us, the community support,” Byam said.
People who want to learn the names of the comedians who will be performing may log onto the Fire Department’s Web site, Rumfordfire.org after Monday.
Firefighters are also selling T-shirts with the union’s logo at the station and at the event. Prices start at $12.
