KAPALUA, Hawaii – Geoff Ogilvy ran off three straight birdies on the back nine and shot an 8-under 65 on Saturday to make the rest of the winners-only field at the Mercedes-Benz Championship feel as though they were playing for second.
The wind switched directions, making Kapalua play entirely different. What didn’t change was the guy atop the leaderboard.
Leading by one shot to start the third round, Ogilvy played bogey-free for the second time in three rounds and wound up with a six-shot lead over Justin Leonard and D.J. Trahan as he tries to win the PGA Tour’s season-opening event.
Joburg Open
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa – South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel had a hole-in-one and finished with an 8-under 63 for a share of the third-round lead in the Joburg Open with South Africa’s Andrew McLardy and Scotland’s David Drysdale.
Schwartzel used a 7-iron for the ace on the 205-yard 12th on Royal Johannesburg and Kensington’s East Course. McLardy had a 69, and Drysdale shot a 71 to match Schwartzel at 11-under 202.
Royal Trophy
BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai stars Thongchai Jaidee and Prayad Marksaeng beat Pablo Larrazabal and Paul McGinley 4 and 2 in fourball play to help Asia takes a 6-1 lead over European in the Royal Trophy.
Charlie Wi and Liang Wen-chong beat Nick Dougherty and Oliver Wilson 3 and 2, and Hideto Tanihara and S.K. Ho edged Niclas Fasth and Johan Edfors 2 and 1.
, and Ryo Ishikawa and Toru Taniguchi halved with Soren Hansen and Paul Lawrie.
The event will conclude Sunday with eight singles matches.
