GREENE – A home on Sawyer Road was destroyed by a fast-burning fire Sunday afternoon.

The homeowner, Louis Angers, of 647 Sawyer Road, was in the two-story home at the time, but escaped injury and fled to the house of a neighbor who called 911 at 12:30 p.m., fire Chief Phil Lavoie said.

It took local firefighters plus emergency workers from five neighboring towns about three hours to bring the blaze under control. Icing from freezing temperatures hampered firefighters’ efforts. The home was a total loss, Lavoie said.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which is not believed to be suspicious, Lavoie said. It likely started in the basement, he said.

The home, a converted camp, is about 70 years old, Lavoie said. He said he believes it was insured.

A cat likely perished in the blaze, Lavoie said.
