Here in Monmouth, we had a mock election in both the high school and the middle school. The outcome was odd, there was a mix of results – some Republican and some Democratic in both schools. Some candidates won by a lot, but there were other votes that were very close, too.

In the high school, the President-elect winner was Barack Obama with 100 votes. John McCain was close behindwith 72 votes. For the U.S. Senator, Susan Collins beat Tom Allen, 92 votes to 47 votes. Chellie Pingree beat out Charlie Summers, 95 votes to 72 votes for the representative to Congress.

The middle school’s votes were also quite close. The President-elect winner was Obama. He had 128 votes to John McCain’s 110 votes. Susan Collins won 175 votes to Tom Allen’s 58 votes for U.S. Senator. Charlie Summers won 98 to Chellie Pingree’s eighty-eight votes for Representative to Congress.

The high school did not vote on the local issues, but the middle school did. For District 21 state Senator, Sharon Benoit won, 150 votes to Earle McCormick’s 59 votes. For District 80 Representative to legislature it was Nancy Smith who won. She had 174 votes over Tammy Gray, who had 3 votes.

For questions one, two, and three in the high school, they all passed. Question one was a tax on malt liquor, wine and soda. It was 115 yes to 20 no. Question two was for the casino in Oxford County. It was 101 for yes to 14 for no. Question three was for the support of drinking water funds. It was 115 yes to 20 no.

In the middle school, the results were quite different. For question one, it was 99: no to 97: yes. For question two, its was 120: no to 79: yes. For question three, it was 106: yes to 90: no.

The votes in the schools were very close to the actual votes the adults cast. If your candidate didn’t get elected, it’s okay, there’s always the next election!
