FARMINGTON – Selectmen agreed Tuesday to seek a $130,000 grant for the Fairbanks School Neighborhood Association.
The money would help pay for the installation of a commercial kitchen in the school, a multi-use building owned by the association on town-owned land.
The plan is to expand economic opportunities for people to process products for resale, said Mary Frank, chairwoman of the association’s Shared Use Kitchen Committee. The kitchen would also provide community cooking classes.
It would serve groups, individuals, home gardeners and farmers who want to start or expand a business, Frank said.
In other business, selectmen reviewed preliminary architectural designs for a proposed 10,000-square-foot public safety building on town property at the corner of High and Farmington Falls roads.
The building fits the lot with space for parking and meets setback requirements, said Town Manager Richard Davis, but the anticipated cost has not been determined. One advantage is the town already owns the site and wouldn’t have to take another site off the tax rolls, he said in response to questions about the suitability of the site.
The board also approved an application from Paul Page to serve on the Police Department space-needs committee. Page’s property abuts the proposed site.
The mileage reimbursement rate for town employees was held at 50.5 cents by selectmen after they considered whether to raise the rate to 55 cents in compliance with the IRS standard rate as of Jan. 1.
