DURHAM – An Auburn woman injured in a head-on crash on Route 136 was improving at a Lewiston hospital Thursday night, a day after the accident.

Erin Powers, 26, was listed in fair condition at Central Maine Medical Center.

An Auburn man, 20-year-old Joshua McKay, was charged with driving with a suspended license after the 5:30 p.m. crash. The crash remained under investigation Thursday.

Maine State Police said McKay was driving north when his Chevrolet Blazer drifted over the centerline and into oncoming traffic. Powers was driving south when her Honda Civic was struck head on, police said.

McKay was not hurt in the crash.

According to state records, he has a considerable history of driving offenses. In 2005, his license was suspended for 30 days after he was convicted of transportation of liquor by a minor.

In late 2006, his license was suspended again, that time for nine months, after he was caught driving as a minor with alcohol in his blood. Two weeks after that conviction, McKay was charged with driving without a license, according to state records.

He was involved in a two-car crash in Freeport in December 2007 and convicted of speeding – 42 in 25 mph zone – in November 2008.

In December, McKay’s license was suspended indefinitely for failing to pay a fine on the speeding conviction.
