LEWISTON – Two men were hurt in separate trucks Friday night when chunks of ice were dropped onto their rigs as they drove on the Maine Turnpike, police said.

One man, headed south in a short tractor-trailer, suffered cuts to his face when a chunk crashed through his windshield, spraying him with glass and ice.

He was taken to Central Maine Medical Center where he was being treated late Friday. He was expected to be released.

The driver of that truck, a Lewiston man, lost control of his rig and slid off the highway, nearly flipping the vehicle over a snowbank.

Another local man in a similar truck was injured when his rig was struck by falling ice at about the same time. That man was also taken to CMMC with scrapes and bruises. The names of the victims were not immediately available.

Lewiston police searched the overpass in the area of Old Webster and Crowley roads where they believe the ice was dropped. They found indications that someone driving through the area had stopped, stepped out onto the bridge and dropped chunks of ice onto both lanes of the turnpike.

Investigators were asking that anyone with information call Maine State Police at 1-800-228-0857.
