RUMFORD – Matt Duka and Christian Durland knew what needed to be done well before the pair stepped on a wrestling mat Saturday at Puiia Gymnasium.

A pin by Durland at 189 pounds provided the clincher in a 40-33 triumph against Camden Hills in a battle between the Class B powers.

Mountain Valley (14-2) ruled the four-team meet by crushing Monmouth Academy, 71-10, in a Mid-State League matchup and Medomak Valley, 65-10.

With two matches remaining, Camden Hills (16-3) trailed 34-27 before Durland ended the drama, quickly. Durland executed a takedown and slipped in his legs to stick Brandon Graffam in the first period.

“My only concern was not going out and getting pinned,” said Durland, who weighs 174 pounds. “I want to do whatever I can in order to help a Mountain Valley team win.”

Pins by Terrence Daigle III (285), Ryan Burgess (103) and Ernie Matthews (135), plus an 8-0 major decision (four team points) by Josh Thornton (140) had put the Falcons ahead 28-15.

“Camden Hills is always a big meet for us,” Falcon coach Gary Dolloff. “We received some big wins. Josh (Thornton) got that major decision and then Duka and Durland. We are peaking at the right time heading in to the tournaments.”

Camden Hills coach Levi Rollins had bumped wrestlers to try gaining an advantage, but Duka set the stage after moving up. The junior wrestled tightly and stuck R.J. Weiss in the third period.

“I knew the team needed it,” Duka said. “So I went out there and did every thing I could to get the job done.”

Monmouth, the lone Class C team, also lost to Camden, 63-15, and Medomak Valley, 42-24. The Mustangs’ Eric Coulumbe and Cody Guzman each won twice at 125 and 160 pounds, respectively. Coulumbe major decisioned the Falcons’ Tim Ross, and Guzman (18-3 overall) stacked Gage David.

“We are coming back from sickness,” Monmouth coach Shawn Schultz said. “The kids were drained the (previous) two meets. We felt we would have fared better today, but we are on the upswing for tournaments.”

Mountain Valley freshman Robert Worthley (103) and Daigle each won against Winthrop independents. Daigle pinned Josh Seekins in 35 seconds. Cody Magoon who had reconstructive shoulder surgery, won a 15-5 major decision at 119, and Brian Cogley (171) came from behind to win 11-10. The Falcon co-captain had trailed 10-5 and escaped in the third period.

“(Jonathan Storer of Medomak) was a taller than me and I couldn’t avoid (double-under hook),” Cogley said. “In the third period, conditioning kicked in because (coach) does a good job of keeping us in shape.”
