LEWISTON – Courtney Vallee wasn’t content with a one-goal lead.
Neither were her teammates, nor was her coach, Ron Dumont.
“That’s what we always say, that we need to treat every situation like it’s still 0-0.”
Vallee isn’t one for waiting for things to happen, either.
The smooth-skating Lew-iston defenseman-turned-forward scored twice in the third period to cap a hat trick as the Blue Devils wore down rival St. Dom’s, scoring four times in the final frame to post a convincing 6-1 victory at the Colisee.
The Blue Devils were coming off the only game to create a blemish on an otherwise perfect record, a 3-3 tie with Winslow. Always a tough game against a rival, Lewiston wasn’t going to let what happened against Winslow to happen again.
“Our team’s gone through a lot in the last week or so,” Vallee said. “We’ve been looking forward to this game for a long time, too, so we all needed to step it up.”
The Saints, meanwhile, have recovered well from a slow start to the season and, despite the loss, are still above .500 at 6-5.
St. Dom’s coach Don Boucher was unavailable for comment following the game.
St. Dom’s showed a few solid flashes early, and one sustained period of pressure late in the third frame, but by the middle part of the second period, Lewiston had worn the Saints down.
“We kind of felt that way, too, honestly,” Dumont said. “We have a lot of strong skaters on our team, and we use that to our advantage.”
The Blue Devils’ defense allowed no shots to reach goalkeeper Stephanie Belanger (10 saves) in the second period, and allowed only two through in the third until the final 30 seconds, when the Saints furiously tried to rally for a goal in the closing seconds.
“She makes the saves we need her to make,” Dumont said. “That’s what we talk about all the time.”
On the other end, Missy Bourgoin (20 saves) was busy, and held her team in the game through two periods.
Katie Cobb scored the first of the game just 2:44 in on a shot high to Bourgoin’s glove side. Anna Desjardin evened things up for the Saints, who stayed close early.
Vallee’s first was a breakaway late in the second frame, when she, too, went high glove to beat Bourgoin.
In the third, Marissa Zamrock tallied the first of her two at 3:01 to push the lead to 3-1.
And then the barrage began.
Zamrock fired her own rebound past Bourgoin at 6:04 to give Lewiston a 4-1 edge, Vallee notched her second at 6:18 to make it 5-1, and she capped the scoring – and her hat trick – at 7:10 of the third period.
