MILLINOCKET – A young Millinocket man died after being shot early Sunday morning at a remote camp near North Twin Lake. The lake is near Millinocket.

Tyler Emerson, 19, was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival at Millinocket Regional Hospital. An autopsy on Emerson’s body is scheduled for Monday at the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta.

Emerson and three friends had snowmobiled to the camp Saturday night, police investigators said. One of his friends had brought a handgun with him.

The initial investigation showed that Emerson had been handling the gun inside the camp and as he passed it to one of his friends, the gun went off and the bullet struck him in the face.

His companions took Emerson by snowmobile to a vehicle, which drove him to the hospital.

Maine game wardens assisted State Police by transporting investigators to the camp Sunday via snowmobile.

Police expect to release the names of the three other young men on Monday.

No decision has been made if any charges will be lodged in connection with the shooting, according to Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.
