CARRABASSETT VALLEY – A 16-year-old female from Connecticut was injured while skiing at Sugarloaf on Tuesday.

Police Chief Scott Nichols said the girl was airlifted from the Carrabassett Valley Airport by LifeFlight of Maine to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston. The girl suffered head and leg injuries but Nichols did not have specifics. He said her name was being withheld until her family could be notified.

Ethan Austin, a spokesman for Sugarloaf, confirmed the girl was hurt while skiing on the Spillway Trail. Austin said she was at the resort as part of its annual Speed Week training camp, which is geared toward competitive ski racers.

The skier was “free skiing” and not participating in sanctioned training activities at the time of the accident, Austin said.

“She went off the trail and hit a tree,” after catching an edge of ski, Austin said. “Our ski patrol responded and transported her immediately to an ambulance.”

Austin said the skier was breathing on her own when she left the resort. No other information was available.
