MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) – A Manchester, N.H., police officer found himself waist deep in water when the ice collapsed under him as he was chasing a suspect across the Piscataquog River.

Police say although Macken fell, the alleged thief he was chasing didn’t get away. Thirty-two-year-old Peter Burgess was arrested by police who were waiting for him on the other side of the river.

Police say Macken and a detective spotted Burgess wearing a ski mask and carrying a speaker while on patrol Tuesday night. When police tried to talk to him, he allegedly ran away, leading Macken onto the icy river.

Burgess is charged with resisting detention and receiving stolen property, both misdemeanors.
