AUBURN – Center Street was reopened Thursday after overnight repairs to a broken water main.
Water district crews wrapped up repairs to a 10-inch water main under Center Street at 1 p.m., Superintendent Norm Lamie said.
“We should be back to four lanes by the evening commute,” Lamie said. “There’ll be a few bumps in the road, but it should be all fixed.”
Crews discovered the broken main about 7:45 p.m. Wednesday. Lamie said the cast-iron pipe dated from about 1930 and had originally followed Glen Street, a discontinued road that ran across Center Street to Turner Street years ago.
Lamie said there was no specific cause found for the broken pipe.
“We didn’t find anything to say there was one thing to blame,” Lamie said. “It’s just an old cast-iron pipe that failed.”
Police said the road was reopened to traffic by 4 a.m. Thursday with one lane in either direction.
