Sponsored by St. Mary’s Medical Center Lewiston, Maine

Trinity’s Literacy Mentoring Program is graciously sponsored by St. Mary’s Medical Center in Lewiston. Fourth grade students mentor first grade students in reading and participate in other literacy activities. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to boost their confidence academically and socially, build community within our school, increase reading time, read books at their individual Guided Reading Level, and ultimately instill and promote the love for reading and increase reading performance.

The program consists of one after school 60 minute session per week for eight weeks. The fourth grade students participate in Mentor Training for the first session. After the training is complete, the fourth grade mentors are issued a Trinity Catholic School Literacy Mentor medal to wear during mentoring sessions. The final seven sessions consist of the fourth and first grade students reading and writing together.

Students meet in the Library at 3:00 and enjoy a snack. During snack time, students are read aloud to. Then students read together (Guided Reading Leveled Books) and participate in other literacy activities for approximately 30 minutes.
