During the last week in January, Bruce M. Whittier Middle School will be having a week of no name-calling. Student council made this decision at their past meeting because there was a lot of it going on. Throughout the week, kids will be able to express their feelings about name-calling and bullying by drawing pictures and writing, poetry, music, essays, and creating other original work. By doing this, they hope to prevent further bullying.
The idea of No Name-calling Week seems to have been established by Tolerance.org, also responsible for Mix-it-up Day. Ms. Nancy Kirk-Barkman, the Whittier guidance counselor, brought the idea to the student council.
At the end of the week our student council will select some winning pieces of work and the students will receive prizes. “I hope that bringing attention to name calling helps students realize what bullying really does to people and maybe this day can make a positive difference in our school,”says Johanna Moody, Whittier student council president. “I also hope that creating the art pieces gives people an opportunity to really express their feelings about how it feels to be bullied.”
