SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) – An aerial acrobat has died after falling 15 to 20 feet and landing headfirst during a performance in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Authorities were investigating the cause of the incident Tuesday at the FBR Open golf tournament event that killed 33-year-old Jose Angel Vera of San Diego.
Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark says Vera fell during a Cirque du Soleil-type performance in which the man unravels his body from a sash while suspended in the air. There was no safety net.
Vera died about 35 minutes after falling on his head.
Clark says witnesses are “absolutely stunned” by the fatal fall during the Aerial Artistry performance.
He says investigators do not suspect foul play or criminal or mechanical issues.
