MEXICO – Police are looking for one or more burglars who broke into a Roxbury Road auto and gun shop and took eight handguns, including two semiautomatic weapons, valued at more than $3,000.
Police Chief James Theriault said someone pushed in the air conditioner opening at the back of Casey’s Auto and Gun Shop sometime between late Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning. The front, plate-glass window was also smashed with a brick. The break-in was reported at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, he said.
The serial numbers of all of the weapons were sent to the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, which sent them to local, state and national police agencies, Theriault said.
Theft of firearms is a federal offense, he said.
Stolen were two .45-caliber revolvers, one .22-caliber semiautomatic, one 9 mm semiautomatic, one .357-caliber revolver, one .32-caliber revolver and one .38-caliber revolver.
Mexico police notified police departments and pawn shops to be on the lookout for the weapons. Pawn shops are required by law to run checks on the serial numbers of weapons.
At least $500 in damage was caused to the business by the break-in.
