MONMOUTH – Anna Smithgall poured in 10 points and Nikki Scott added eight as Winthrop hustled to a 44-39 victory over Monnouth in a MVC girl’s basketball matchup Thursday evening.
The Ramblers (9-6) held a slim two-point lead at the break, then outscored their opponent by four in the third to create a little breathing room.
The Mustangs (2-13) were paced by Bethany Neal and Alyssa Morin with 14 points each.
NYA 50, Gould 37
BETHEL – Hillary Keach drained 18 points to lead North Yarmouth Academy to a 50-37 victory over Gould in girls’ basketball action Thursday.
The Panthers pounced to a 28-16 hafltime lead. Katherine Merrill chipped in with 11 points for North Yarmouth Academy.
The Huskies (6-9) stepped it up in the second half, but only managed to stop the bleeding, not reverse their fortunes. Senior guard Michaela Cummings notched a team-high 16 points, while Michelle Kravitz collected 15 points in the losing effort.
Dirigo 47, Telstar 26
BETHEL – Jane Hebert tossed in the game-high 12 points and Dirigo held Telstar to single-digit scoring for all four quarters as the Cougars glided to a 47-26 victory in a girls’ basketball game Thursday.
Dirigo (9-5) jumped to a 32-14 halftime lead after erupting for 19 points in the second quarter.
For Telstar, Brianna Douglass, Emma Davis and Cheyanne Day each scored eight points.
Hockey
Lewiston 6, Winthrop 0
KENTS HILL – Marisa Zamrock netted a pair of goals Thursday as Lewiston skated to a 6-0 rout over Winthrop in girls’ hockey action.
Courtney Vallee, Bianca Langelier, Emily Cloutier and Mariah Conway also tallied for the Blue Devils (14-1-2) to complete the scoring. Steffanie Belanger and Sarah Turner combined for 14 saves to preserve the shutout.
Ashley Marcellino turned aside 21 shots between the pipes for Winthrop.
